Petulu village also called Kokoan village because this
village has incredible natural charm with thousands of Kokoan birds or White
Storks, fly to the sky and comfortably living on the trees along the road of this
village.
According to a legend of local villagers, these birds are
sacred, supposedly in 1965 that at that time
only a few number of Kokoan birds, the birds being hunted by humans. They came
to the village of Petulu to catch and eat the birds, but strangely they again
came to the Petulu village to inform the villagers that they were visited by a
large black creature both undreamed and
in reality.
Based on such things then be made an apology ceremony at
the local temple, when the ceremony held, a priest had been experiencing
possessed and said that the Kokoan birds is Ida Betara’s (god) guardians.
Kokoan birds come to the village of November to March to
make nest, lay eggs and hatch their eggs, in April chicks have started to fly
and feed until the population is reduced during the day and return to the village
at 6 pm (local time). Life looks like so harmonious in Petulu village, between
man and nature.

Petulu village located in Petulu main road (Jalan raya Petulu), Ubud
Sub-district, Gianyar Bali. It’s exactly 5 Km in the north of Ubud. You can also check the location via Google Map.
If you
depart from Denpasar, it only takes for about 1 hour to reach Ubud. There are
so many transport service providers that you can find in Denpasar or other
places in Bali such as car rentals, taxi or bus.
In Ubud, you can hire bicycles with cost around Rp
10.000/day. The best time to watch Kokoan Birds is around Oktober-march. Don’t
